New Office Space Coming to West Columbia

A new Class A office building is expected to be under construction at 508 Meeting Street in West Columbia by the end of August and available after the first of the year.
508 Meeting Street is being developed by Joe Taylor, the former S.C. Secretary of Commerce, who formed State Street Development to facilitate and manage the project. This is Taylor’s third project in West Columbia.
The 2-story, 5,400-square-foot building will be brick with a standing seam metal roof.
The building is designed to accommodate up to 21people in a combination of offices and open-office configuration and has a conference room and employee break room. It is also designed for maximum energy efficiency. Wayne Rogers, Catalyst Architects, designed the building, and Boyer Commercial Construction of Columbia is the contractor.
The building will be available for sale or lease to a single tenant and will have on-site parking. The infill project is located next to First Community Bank at 506 Meeting St. Taylor bought the vacant lot about a year and a half ago.
“Frankly there has not been any Class A Space available over here,” Taylor said, “and if this performs like we think it will, it will be the first of many. The goal is to set the tone for future development along Meeting Street with the look of this building.”
Tem Miles, West Columbia city councilman and mayor pro tem, is very excited about the new office project. “I get calls every day from people who want to move to West Columbia, and they haven’t been able to find somewhere to move their offices because there hasn’t been any Class A space for rent or to buy. It will be the first time in a long time that we have had space available.”
Meeting Street is the commercial corridor for West Columbia, Miles said. “It is the heart of West Columbia. There are a lot of established businesses along Meeting Street that have done well for decades, like Nordan’s Trim Shop and Bill’s Music Shop and Pickin’ parlor, so 508 Meeting will offer a proven commercial location,” he said.
Miles praised Taylor’s efforts in West Columbia. “Joe has played a very, very active role and invested heavily in doing this. He has set the design standard for State Street. If you look at the revitalization and redevelopment projects he has done on State Street, it has set the standard for what State Street will look like, And we are working with him right now to do that same thing on Meeting Street. I think this office building will be the first visible example of that,” Miles said
“You look back in American history, opportunities almost always lie to the West. And that is still true,” he said.
