Staff Report From South Carolina CEO
Tuesday, December 11th, 2018
The South Carolina Department of Education released the first list of Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) schools as required under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
Under the ESSA, the South Carolina Department of Education is required to identify schools meeting certain criteria that classifies them as schools in need of additional support and improvement. These designations and the state level support they will receive are explained in the South Carolina School Improvement Designation document.
CSI schools are identified every three years and identified based on one or more of the following criteria:
Lowest 5%: Any Title I school that based on report card performance fall into the bottom 5% of all schools when separated by school type
Low Graduation Rate: Any high school, Title I or Non-Title I, with a graduation rate of less than 70%.
CSI schools are provided with a state transformation coach, a needs assessment, and are required to use the South Carolina School Improvement Framework and evidence-based interventions. CSI schools also receive additional federal and state funding to be used specifically for improvement.
