John C. Griggs III, Columbia market president for NBSC, was named the South Carolina Bankers Association’s Outstanding Young Banker for 2017 at the SCBA’s Annual Meeting, held June 8-10.

The Outstanding Young Banker Award is chosen by the SCBA Past Chairman’s Club and has been given to one deserving banker each year since 1970. Past recipients include many prominent South Carolina bankers.

“We are very proud of John and we are excited about this well-deserved recognition of his achievements with our company as well as his contributions to the community and to the Association,” said NBSC President and CEO Chuck Garnett. “John is not only an outstanding young leader in our industry, he is a great person and we’re proud to have him on our team.”

Griggs, 39, succeeds last year’s honoree, Jennifer T. Jones, president and CEO of Greer-based Citizens Building and Loan.

“John joins an elite group of individuals by being recognized with the Outstanding Young Banker award, which is the highest honor presented in the South Carolina banking industry,” said Fred Green, president and CEO of the S.C. Bankers Association. “I’m certain that like all past recipients, he’ll continue to play an important role in his institution, the banking industry and his community.”

Griggs is a 2000 graduate of the University of South Carolina. He joined NBSC, which is a division of Synovus, the following year, and quickly began to make a name for himself within the statewide banking company.

In addition to his role with NBSC, Griggs recently served as chairman of the South Carolina Bankers School, of which he is a graduate. He is also a product of the Graduate School of Banking at LSU.

Griggs is active in the Columbia community. He is chairman-elect of the Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital board, serves on the board of The Carolina Alumni Club of Richland and Lexington Counties and is a member of University Associates. Griggs also serves on a sub-committee for BIPEC and on the Festival of Trees committee. He volunteers for Harvest Hope and recently served as lead for the 2016 March of Dimes campaign at NBSC.

Griggs and his wife Catherine have a son and daughter.
